There's no adjustments for me. I knew the school pretty well because I spent my high school years in the same university so I really didn't have that "first day kaba". College life surprised me! Doors of opportunity came in. :)))
One day I received a call from one of the faculty member saying I will be part of the delegation to be sent to the Regional Work Conference in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro. Of course I was thrilled and excited. (libre na din ang trip papuntang Mindoro! minsan lang yan.) I will be competing for Oratorical Speech Competition! nervousness came in.
So let me share to you my winning piece for the 4th Regional Work Conference held at the Mindoro State College for Agriculture and Technology!
*With all the advancement of technology today, indeed it gave us a comfortable way of living. Nothing seems to be impossible through technology. Everything seems to be so easy. But with these modern conveniences arises different harms. Our environment is in grave danger. Trees had been cut down in order to give way to the construction of tall buildings. Forest had been converted into posh subdivisions and other modern infrastructure. In addition to that, our country experienced temperature spikes due to climate change. Hot days and hot nights have become more frequent. Extreme weather events have also occurred frequently. These include deadly and damaging typhoons, floods, landslides severe El Niño and La Niña events, and droughts. Adversely affected sectors include agriculture, freshwater, coastal and marine resources and health. As a result, those destructive phenomena had ruined thousands of lives and left multi-million damages. But have we asked ourselves how things happened? Are we aware that these catastrophes are merely brought about by man? Have we realized the total devastation we created? That there is no one to blame but us!
The rapid development of technology is one factor that causes all these. Our country wants to be at par with those progressive nations through modern technology. Pushing economic growth through modernization is not the only alternative left for us to do. We, Filipinos are blinded by the up-to-the minute gadgets offered to us. I would like to clear that I do not despise the technology that we are enjoying today what I want to give emphasis is that our own natural resources can help us achieve economic stability. Philippines, in the first place is an agricultural country. With a total land area of 300,000 square kilometers which can be used to flourish our agricultural sector. Come to think of this, instead of converting our green pastures into fancy infrastructure why don’t we engage ourselves into developing ways to improve the agricultural industry here in our country. Aside from investing in our own progress at the same time we employ our citizens into an activity that is environmental friendly. As a young Filipino, we should have the initiative to change our country’s path. For we, are the heirs of this nation. As they always put it, the youth is the hope of our country. We should work hand in hand and share our talents to attain economic growth. I believe that with our shared talents and knowledge we can create a progressive Philippines. Let’s open our mind to the options laid upon us. I firmly believe that our own natural resources- our fertile soils, our fresh water resources can help us climb the top. Let us help our government in working for a sustainable agriculture and reduce environmental crisis. There are simple ways that we can do in order to help. First, let us change our lifestyle. Look for cheaper alternatives, the use of coal can be one. At the end of the day the world once used coal and the air that we breathe is far worse than that of today. This is also one way of helping our nation, conferences like this helps us realize the real key to our country’s success. It is nice to picture that if we work to achieve a well established agricultural industry we are also about to end different crisis. In each crop we plant, we can reduce pollution. In each crop we harvest, we feed a hungry Filipino.
It’s about time that we get up from our couches and do our part as citizens of this nation. The young Filipino’s innovative talents, ideas and intelligence is about to grace Philippines. We, the young ones are now ready to take a step that will change our nation’s path for better. Let us give our nation the victory it longed to have and the success that it deserves.
